Pencils in the Hands of God

Reflection by Fran Moye

This past July I had the privilege of returning to Ghana.

During my time there I attended our leader retreat where David, our water project engineer, gave an update on the water projects. While he was sharing, he said something that stuck in my mind. He mentioned that “we are the pencil in God’s hand.”

I have thought about that a lot over the past months since returning home. We often say we trust God, but we are holding tight to the pencil! We want to be the one writing the story and making the decisions. We want to be the one in control. We trust in ourselves. But it is a reminder that we are to be a tool God uses to write His perfect and beautiful story. We are His hands and feet in this world.

As I listened to David share about being a vessel God is using to bring clean water to the YLI communities, I was reminded that all I want to be is “a pencil in God’s hand.”
