“I feel like I am getting to know Jim through this,” I shared with Fran last weekend after digitalizing a few of Jim’s sermons.
We had spent the afternoon pulling out tapes, figuring out which side of the tape had the beginning of the sermon versus the end, fast forwarding through old hymns, and compiling the recordings into mp3 files.
Through his words, I am discovering more about the YLI ministry approach and Jim's heart for the lost. His love, poured out through his life and teaching, is forming my heart to want to reach the lost and to share Christ with others.
But, hearing Jim's sermons are meaningful beyond just understanding the ministry. As I hear Jim's personal stories, I am getting to know my father-in-law.
I have heard stories of Jim from Fran, Daniel, Ash, and others, but this sermon project makes me feel like I am building my own memories with him. I'm getting to know his character, his personality, and his history, and apply his wisdom to my life. I get to learn the heart of my father-in-law. I can imagine what it would be like to have my own friendship and relationship with Jim - I have so many questions about ministry and seminary that I would love to ask him!
Our heavenly Father has given us His word, not on a cassette tape from the 90s, but through Scripture. Through His word, we get to learn the heart of the Father.
God reveals His character and love to us, but revelation through His word in Scripture was not enough for God. For us to know Him deeper and to have a personal relationship with Him, God sent His son Jesus as the Word made flesh!
The Father invites all of us to know His heart.
Just as I pay attention to Jim's sermons and hang on every word, how much more should I pay attention and cling to God's Word? I pray that as you listen to Jim's sermons, it reignites a passion for God's Word in your life.
